The Energy Roller Coaster
Why your energy levels fluctuate and how to ride it out.
Hey everyone,
Today, I want us to look at energy fluctuations and explore ways to manage them.
We have all had days where we feel unstoppable ā tackling projects, crushing to-do lists, and generally feeling like we could conquer the world.
On the contrary, there are days where getting out of bed feels like a monumental task. The struggle is real! It is like our energy levels are on a wild roller coaster ride.
So, what is going on here? Is it normal to have energy levels that swing like a pendulum? Let me break it down for you.
Why the ups and downs?
There are numerous factors that make our energy levels swing:
The Sleep Factor
Think of sleep as your body and mind's power recharge. If you are not getting enough quality sleep, your energy tank will be empty. It is like trying to run your phone on 2% battery. Lack of quality sleep comes with many other health complications, as explained by the NIH.Ā Ā
The Stress Factor
Stress is a major energy drain. When we are under pressure, our bodies kick into survival mode, leaving us feeling depleted. Again, stress will not only drain your energy, but also expose you to various health risks.Ā
The Food Factor
Our bodies need the right fuel to keep up! Unbalanced diets, skipping meals, and overdoing sugar or caffeine can send our energy levels crashing. Check out this article for foods that will boost your energy levels.Ā Ā
The Movement (or lack of it) Factor
Regular exercise might seem counterintuitive if you are feeling tired, but it actually gives you more energy in the long run. On the flip side, too much sitting saps your energy. Indeed, one cannot overemphasize the health benefits of exercising regularly.Ā Ā
The Invisible Factor
Sometimes hidden stuff is at play ā think hormone imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, or even underlying health conditions.
Is it normal?
Yes, these energy fluctuations are a totally normal part of being human. Everyone experiences them from time to time. You are not a robot programmed to run at the same power level 24/7. Even robots get their parts worn out if they run continuously without servicing.Ā
When should the alarm bells ring?
If your energy swings are really extreme, or if your lows are lasting for weeks and are seriously impacting your daily life, that is when it is time to check in with your doctor.
It is a good idea to rule out any medical reasons behind the fatigue.
So, what can we do about it?
While we cannot eliminate energy dips completely, we can definitely smooth out those highs and lows by:
a). Prioritizing sleep: You should make non-negotiable time for 7-8 hours of quality sleep every night.
b). Managing stress- You should find stress-busters that work for you ā it could be exercising, meditating, journaling, time in nature, or anything else that dials down the stress thermostat.
c). Fueling your body right:- This means focusing on whole foods, balanced meals, and steady hydration. Do you drink enough water daily?
Keep in mind that optimal hydration will slow down your aging, and who would not want to stay young?Ā
e). Moving:- It is time you aimed for regular physical activity, even if it is just a daily walk to keep your energy levels high. You might think that being physically active will wear you down, but experts suggest the opposite.Ā
f). Listening to your body:- When you are hitting a low, take a break. Restorative activities are just as crucial as getting things done. Remember, sometimes slowing down helps you power up.
g). Cycle Syncing:- Menstruating women will experience different energy levels based on the phase of their menstrual cycle. You should consider cycle syncing to help you optimize your energy levels in each phase of your cycle.
It is important to remember that it is a journey, not an overnight fix. Be patient with yourself and keep experimenting to see what makes those energy levels tick for you!
